Singing the Song of the Unsung Hero
by
|

Renee P. Aldrich
On last week I spend the day rifling through old papers, trying to get some order where their usually is none. I came upon an envelope which at first glance seemed to be some type of unsolicited advertisement. I noticed two things right away that intrigued me and kept it from landing in the circular file - One thing was that it was dated February 20, 2009, and second under more direct scrutiny, I observed the return address-IT was from the Carnegie Museum, Teenie Archives Collection!
No I was not going to toss this envelope now, and it was clear that this had not been sent out in some bulk mail bundle. I tore into the white 8 X 10 package. A letter came out address to me from a photographer - he was apologizing to me for the extreme delay on getting this material to me. He had been going through the notes of his former colleague and found where she had interviewed me in the matter of a photo I identified of my grandmother which had been taken by the great Teenie Harris. They had interviewed me and an article about her had actually ran in the "Carnegie Mellon Alumni" magazine. Which I had long forgotten about..
My grandmother was the owner of Ma Pitt's Restaurant which was located at Wylie and Townsend; and was one of the 8 to 10,000 homes and businesses that had been destroyed by "Urban Redevelopment" in otherwords the Civic Arena.
My excitement now heightened, I poured into the envelope to discover first of all an article written for the Courier in 1955 covering Ma Pitts and her restaurant, the VERY TYPE OF STORY, which I now write for the New Pittsburgh Courier, almost 50 years later! This article opened with a quote from her, a quote from her own voice discussing her business, what her intention is and why she is committed to excellence in food, and in basically fulfilling a desire to make sure "her" people who want it, can have a home cooked meal, whether they have money or not!.
I read this quote about 3 times (it is a technique I use in my own stories, quotes from the individual) and as I did so, I was able to conjure up my grandmother's voice, which I had not heard since I was 13 years old. I could hear her yelling out on Wylie after me and my brother, Greg, then 4 years old. She pronounced m name "Ray Nay".. after reading this article my vision of her and the sound of her seem to fill my room. I could see her in her chair negotiating with a white salesmen, who really thought they knew more about business than she did, I could see her giving instruction or otherwise holding court; and demanding that certain men who came to her place without money be given a bowl of beans and a big piece of cornbread.
The most incredible pearl then fell out of the envelopment; it was a reprint of the front page spread of the Courier's coverage of my grandmother's funeral.!! There coming down the steps of historic Wesley Centre AMEZ Church, on the front page in front of my grandmother's coffin stood my mother and father (now each deceased). My dad was comforting my mother clearly bereft with her grief. They were so young looking in this photo and I know they were 38 and 42 respectively. I was spell bound as I saw my uncles in the other photos. The banner head line read "Last Rites Held for Hill Business Woman, Ma Pitts!.

The article included the details of her three restaurants, including the fact that she financed her two sisters in opening their business the B&M which was opened from the mid 50's until early 70's at the location just above St. Benedict the Moor church on Centre Avenue.
My grandmother was an astute business woman, she and her husband of 57 years raised seven stellar children and taught them that family always came first. The led by example; their marriage was a partnership, she had a head for business and my grandfather was okay with that, he had a head, and mind for work, and she was okay with that. He worked 40 years between the B. & O railroad, and the J&L Steel Mill.
Along with her restaurants, she was a homeowner several times over, she owned our first house on Irvine Street in Hazelwood, a home on 59 Marion Street, which she converted to a large boarding house, and the home at 2127 tustin Street where I and my brothers grew up.
She gave away 100's of meals in any given month, she provided jobs, and many times a place to live for sometime folks who had issues w/alcohol or were just down on their luck. She used to say you can still help people no matter what there station is; just make sure you keep your expectations centered on yourself and not them!"
The new Pittsburgh Courier recently announced its 2010 Tribute to 50 women of Excellence; you forgot one Mr. Doss, her name is Erin Godfrey. She left a footprint that exemplifies entrepreneurship and Women in business. She did so in a town who kept the doors shut on all African Americans especially women, she did this in a time when there was no office of Minority, Women and Disadvantage Business Entrepreneurs, she did it before there was any instructions at the YW for women who wanted to start businesses, before there was an SBA that would finance Blacks in Business.
Finding this envelop really came at a most interesting time as I am at a place of new discovery in regard to my own 'purpose'. Its like I had been not sure of certain things, and directions I was feeling led and I found that material, which revealed to me the stock from which I come. Perhaps my grandmother was sending me a word of encouragement and support.

"KEEPING IT "REAL"
with Corporate Planners Inc.
Denise L. Norris
For those who have or did have a wonderful father, you are blessed! For me, I lost my dad a number of years ago. However, I still have great memories of a big, tall, handsome hard working and supportive daddy. Now my dad was human and certainly had his short comings...A chain smoker, he ultimately lost his life due to one of his bad habits.
However, when I think of how hard daddy worked, sacrificed and wanted the best for his family, I realize more than ever just how fortunate we were. We had a daddy, idiosyncrasies and all, that was a strong male figure in our lives and we were blessed to have.
Both my mother and father were wonderful parents- mommy still is. They often both worked two jobs, to provide the best for us. We were never without. Mom a nurse, who also did extra work as a private duty nurse. And daddy was a private contractor, who worked both week days and weekends to get ahead. The older I get, the more I appreciate who they were, what they stood for and the legacy they both left our family. Sometimes and in some cases, I think my parents have done and still for mom, do too much. Even today, mom still feels more comfortable giving then receiving- this is all I have every known.
As a mother of four children, one daughter and three sons, I thank God for my husband. My husband has been and is a strong father figure for my children. Now for my marital relationship, God has truly added the increase.
During the early years, hubby and I struggled to keep our marriage together. Looking back, I realize that we were both so silly about many things. Becoming "one" is more than a notion and the "five stages of marriages", was not a part of our vocabulary or a part of our knowledge in the early years.
When you witness in the media marriages breaking up after (40) years, we count our blessings to have weathered the storm and pressed on in growth. I am thankful that I was blessed with a husband who is much more tolerant, self-sacrificing and forgiving than me - I love my husband for his stick- to -it -ness..
But for the grace of God, we worked through our differences. In addition and like so many beautiful couples who touched our lives during our trials early in our marriage, we now can return the blessing in ministering to other couples.
There are all types of fathers...I say that thinking about my brother, Greg. Greg is a single father. I call him a "mommy-daddy". I say this because he is so attentive, nurturing, caring and supportive towards his son Tyler- we just celebrated Tyler's two year old birthday in Baltimore this past weekend.
I am so blessed by watching Greg interact with his son and my little nephew, Tyler. Greg is like an old "mother hen" with his son. I never thought that I would ever see Greg be so attentive and caring. Greg is a younger brother. Slightly spoiled himself, Greg has always been about Greg before Tyler was born- love you brother! It is amazing what a father's love will do for his child and how this love moves mountains and changes things.
If your dad or father figure is still living (husbands, uncles, grandfathers and brothers too), give them a big hug for father's day. Tell them what a wonderful daddy they are to you and for their kids or family.
Mother's are wonderful and there is no comparison for a mother's love. But to have, or to have known, a wonderful father figure is even a greater blessing.
And most importantly, please remember that the best father of all is our heavenly father- what would any of us do without Him- I do not want to even think about it!
Stay blessed and be a blessing,

TOP 10 TIPS FOR A FIT AND FABULOUS SUMMER |
|
Edwina KaiKai
Can you believe it? Summer is right about the corner! Time to switch out the winter woolens for the summer sheers we love.
It's also time to get in the right frame of mind for making 2010 the year our summer activities supports our desire to get/stay fit and get/stay feeling fabulous. Below are my tips to launch us on our way:
10. Decide that fun, fit and fabulous are compatible terms. Believe it's possible to enjoy summer fun without blowing our plan for healthy eating, healthy living. For example, we can go to our favorite amusement park and indulge in one of our favorite eating treats. Decide before entering whether it'll be the funnel cake, the corn dog, curly fries w/cheese or the cotton candy. We can have one treat, not all of them on one visit. Or at Dairy Queen, ask for the child's size cone, rather than the small. It really is enough to satisfy a craving for a cool and creamy treat.
9. Plan yard work around non-peak sunshine hours. That means get out there before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m. The sun's rays are strongest between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. And the sun is the #1 agent aging our skin.
8. Speaking of sun - use a sunscreen. Every day. Even those of us with dark skin! Sun damage doesn't discriminate. Whether your skin is ivory white, darkest ebony or somewhere in between, using a sun screen is the best thing we can do for your skin. Look for an SPF of 30 and the words multi-spectrum or broad spectrum on the label to make sure it protects from UVA and UVB rays.
7. Quench that thirst with water! A cold beer or frothy umbrella drink may seem like the perfect antidote for a parched throat on a hot day, but it's not. Alcoholic beverages actually dehydrate us, making us thirstier, not less. So, when we do have that beer or frothy drink, we should follow it with an 8 ounce glass of water.
6. Exercise regularly. How much exercise depends on your fitness goal. According to the folks at Weight Watchers, we need to exercise for 45 minutes if we want to enhance our weight loss. To maintain weight loss, make it 60 to 90 minutes. To improve our fitness, we need to get in 30 to 45 minutes of vigorous cardio work three or more days a week. For improved overall health, a minimum of 30 minutes of mid-intensity cardio 5 days a week is needed. And to tighten and tone the body, we need resistance training (weights, bands, etc.) 2 to 3 times a week.
5. Get in at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Salads work year round, but they're ideal in summer when looking for an easy one-dish, no-oven, energy-saving offering. Add meats, cheeses or nuts to greens for protein; toss in orange sections, grapes, strawberries for color and another serving of fruit. What's a serving? 1 cup uncooked veggies or fruit; ยฝ cup cooked.
4. Sleep. Get enough of it, preferably 7 hours a night. The body needs rest to function at its peak.
3. Opt for effective snacking. Skip the candy bar or chips, go for a more nutritious choice instead. Reach for fresh fruits, water-packed fruit cups, string cheese, nuts, etc.
2. Schedule quiet time daily. Take time to relax and quiet the mind. Write in a journal, read the Bible or the main book of your faith, meditate. As little as 10 minutes spent in quiet meditation can make a difference.
1. Smile. It's hard to stay in a bad mood when you smile. And smiles are contagious. Smile at someone and make their day!
There you have it. My Top 10. What tips would you add to the list? Send them to me and I'll share in a future column. In the meantime, let's make this our most fit and fabulous summer yet!

A Softer Side
by
Renee P. Aldrich
Is It Time to Give Life To Something in Your Life? |
|
Renee P. Aldrich
Resurrection has a couple variations in its meeting; the official definition as noted in the Webster's online dictionary is 1; The act of rising from the dead or returning to life. 2; The state of one who has returned to life and 3; The act of bringing back to practice, notice, or use; revival.
I do not believe it is an accident that this season of new growth all around us is also the time that we acknowledge the drama of the Cross, and Christ's ultimate 'Resurrection". I think that God in his infinite wisdom was intentional as he came up with the Season. He of course as the creator of everything, knew that there would be a need for renewal in all the species. He knew that buds that looked dead and gone throughout the winter months were just taking a temporary respite; and would come alive again as soon as his special season of spring arrived. He set it up so that those leaves that had browned and crusted over during the time immediately following fall would come forth renewed and revived green and beautiful again.
It is the same with us; we have seasons that we pass through; sometime they are recurring, and sometime we seem locked into a season of no growth, no development,, nothing is flourishing in our lives and we feel stuck and immobile with no change in sight. God knows this, and as he has done for the various plant and animal species, he has done for us; created a time for us to 'come alive' again. Spring is a good time for renewal, but for some it does not always occur then.
You may find yourself in a relationship that has grown old, stale, is not developing and is essentially dying. You may realize that if you are to experience personal GROWTH, that you must resurrect yourself from this situation that is dead but for any variety of reasons you don't make the move to do so. You could be in a work situation that is really an 'empty' place for you in that there is no upward or forward movement for you professionally. In your heart you know that you should be taking steps to get out of this dead situation and enhance your career whatever that may mean for you; perhaps seeking better opportunity, or returning to school for the credentials necessary to take the leap. Either way, moving to revive your waning professional life is a resurrection of dreams and/or aspirations that were almost dead and buried.
A woman entering a softer more loving relationship with herself is on the lookout for the dead spaces in her life. She understands that if there is something stagnant, not serving a purpose she should either inject it with new life, in order to cause it to come to revive itself, , or move away from it to something "alive".
A woman I know worked 12 years at a store of a major telecommunications company. This woman was hugely creative, and was always bursting with brilliant ideas. She worked over those years under yet one unresponsive manager after another. There was not much room for her own progression because she was not a 'game' player, so to speak. She had a family and this job took care of very vital needs; so she worked it. Yet she knew in her heart she was being stifled here, she knew that her creative breath was being cut off, so in essence her spirit was dying a slow death as she daily went through the motions of 'making a living'. Many times when our courage or efforts aren't being stimulated, the Universe, recognizes when it is time to breath life into a dead place. Just as Jesus did when he finally got to the home of Lazarus- he presented his resurrecting power to him and Lazarus came to life.
The store she was in was shut down and employees were given a 'buyout' or an offer to be sent to another store which was not being closed. My friend elected for the buyout; and with it she begin the process of resurrecting her personal goals, and dreams of becoming a business owner. A business that gave way to expression of her magnificent creative energy; and one that ultimately allowed her to provide opportunity to other young women whose lives might be in a dead space. That was over ten years ago. Because she embrace the necessity of resurrection; and was obedient to the calling on her life, she has been gifted to donate funds to Shelters for Abused women, started a school where other women could become independent; and host an event honoring pioneers in her industry.
Resurrection, renewal, reviving, are all terms that are synonymous with life, expansion, new health, and accomplishment. In this season of renewal take stock of who you are, where you are and remember whose you are; and see if there is not a space in your life that you can resurrect, give life to, and in doing so, like my wonderfully gifted friend, create a chain of positive activity for all those whose life you touch. .

1912- 2010
I want to be remembered as someone who used herself and anything she could touch to work for justice and freedom.... I want to be remembered as one who tried. ~Dorothy Height
The Godmother of the Civil Rights movement, as Dorothy Irene Height is known, turned 98 this last week. She spent her birthday in the hospital, in critical but stable condition. News of her condition has traveled around the web, resulting in her name trending to number 1 in the United States on Twitter today as fans expressed condolences in the wake of a rumor that she had died. No official word has been released of her death at the time of publication.
Dorothy Height dedicated her life to civil rights causes for African Americans and women. She was born in 1912 in Richmond, VA, but spent most of her childhood near Pittsburgh, PA. She attended university in New York, receiving a Bachelor and a Master Degree in four years. In 1933 she became involved with and made a name for herself in the United Christian Youth Movement (UCYM), working to end lynching, integrate the Armed Services, and reform the criminal justice system. She also began to work during this time with the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), a relationship she would foster for the rest of her working life. Read the rest of this entry ยป

"KEEPING IT "REAL"
with Corporate Planners Inc.
G-20 main Welcome Center Ambassadors with CP reunite for the Getting-to-the- Point Luncheon in March- August Wilson Center: Dr. Ellen Roth, CP, Carmella Wehrle & Zibby McGlumphy. It was such an enjoyable afternoon. Dr. Roth is a class act in all that she does - her annual luncheon in honor of her clients was no exception. All three ladies were part of a dynamic God sent team during the G-20. I felt honored and joyous to see them again and to have been invited to the luncheon.
NEED Keynote Speaker: Derrius Quarles, Nehemiah Norris and Mr. Pace, NEED Executive Director. If you missed this speaker you missed a blessing! Derrius earned over one millions dollars of scholarship money to attend college, was raised in (11) foster homes, his father was killed at an early age and his birth mother has issues with drugs and jail for most of his life- he overcame it all with hard work, determination and self-motivation. Kudos goes to Mr, Pace and his team for obtaining this awesome young keynote speaker for this years annual benefit dinner at the Hilton downtown. What an inspirational story this young man shared and dynamic speaker he is.
There was more that went on durning the month than St. Patty's Day and the NBA March Madness this past March! Thanks to Erve and Jenese Williams, we were invited to a fundraiser at the AWC for gubernatorial primary candidate and County Executive: Dan Ornorato. More details to follow about all the candidates for this most important PA race. L: Dan Ornorato, CP and hubby, Rev. Urie Norris- "U", open your eyes when you smile :) !

Healthy Habits, Beauty Basics
by Edwina Kaikai
LET'S HEAR IT FOR THE SUPER FRUITS! |
|
Edwina KaiKai
Spring is here and the time is right for fresh fruits such as : .....Tucked next to them may be guavas, figs, pomegranates. They're the fruits you probably hadn't heard of or thought of eating until recently. They're appearing on the ever-growing lists of super fruits and they're turning up in everything from martinis to smoothies to the latest botanical beauty and skin care products.
So just what is a super fruit? The US Food and Drug Administration hasn't set a standard a fruit needs to meet to earn the "super" label, but in the science and research communities super fruits are generally considered to be any fruit that has an exceptionally high dose of nutrients the body needs. They're super packed with minerals, vitamins, but especially that often heard (but little understood) word - antioxidants.
Antioxidants are the warrior substances in foods that fight free radicals. Free radicals are unstable oxygen molecules generated naturally inside the body as well as outside of it by such things as sunlight and pollution. They float freely in the body looking for healthy, stable cells to latch onto to become stable themselves. Unfortunately, when they do connect with healthy cells, they tear them down, wear them down. And that's the process that is said to lead to a breakdown of the body through aging and a weakened immune system, thus opening the door to all sorts of diseases and ailments.
Fruits and vegetables are our best sources of antioxidants. The most common antioxidants are vitamins A, B, C and E, plus the minerals zinc and selenium. In addition to antioxidants, super fruits also have phytochemicals, believed to be able to protect healthy cells while fighting off carcinogens.
So if you needed another reason to get in your 5-a-day (minimum) servings of fruits and vegetables, here it is. There are many different lists of super fruits, but here are some fruits common to most lists: acai berries, blueberries, cherries, figs, kiwi, grapes, guavas, mango, and pomegranates.
So go on, eat up! It's to your health!

BE OPTIMISTIC by C. Denise Johnson

C. Denise Johnson
Census Day has come and gone, and I did not receive a form in the mail.
Being the peaceful type, I tacked it up to the fact that Google couldn't find my address the first year after I moved into my newly-opened Hill District community (as in, I am the previous tenant) and since I worked for the Census Bureau in 1990 I wasn't really put off since I knew the logistics of being an enumerator (which involves verifying addresses on a computer-generated printout).
But then I got to thinking about how important it is to be counted - it is as important as my vote being counted to elect Barack Obama president of these United States; only this time being counted will impact how my tax dollars will be spent, how much funding will be allotted to my neighborhood, the types of services that will be offered and provided, and the number of representatives I will have working for me in Washington and Harrisburg.
Well guess what - I count, so I refuse to be left out or counted out. I first asked my neighbors if they received census forms and they said "no" (as I suspected). Returning home from a civic event I saw one of my favorite civil servant/community activists (yes, Brenda Tate, I'm putting you on blast), shared my righteous indignation about the census situation and she told me to go to the Hill District Carnegie Library and get a form there.
So if you're like me and don't want to government knocking on your door to be counted, be proactive (like yours truly). You could go your community center, church, library, or police district, fire station or city hall and get your form. It comes in a packet with a pre-addressed, prepaid return envelope (just like your bills - except this one you do want to return).
I know I count. Do you?
While we count our blessings, let us not forget the less fortunate - such as our brothers and sisters in Haiti. No amount is too small. Please join me in supporting this unprecedented ongoing humanitarian effort.
